Conserving the nesting habitat of the endangered Black-capped Vireo and Golden-cheeked Warbler, Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge provides a terrific nature outing for birders of all ages. Set among terraced limestone hills and spring fed canyon lands, the refuge invites visitors to explore its 5 miles of foot trails over creeks and through the prairies of their Golden-cheeked Warbler habitat, or relax on the lovely Shin Oak Observation Deck while keeping a close eye and ear open for nesting Black-capped Vireo nearby. The refuge also offers several birding events throughout the year, such as their Christmas Bird Count in January and Sparrow Fest in February. Located approximately 35 miles northwest of Austin, the sanctuary lies just outside of Lago Vista near beautiful Lake Travis.
Open daily sunrise - sunset.
Free.
